6 Days Gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda - Safari Overview

Uganda and Rwanda are the two most popular destinations for gorilla trekking, and while both offer an incredible and life-changing experience. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is generally considered more accessible and less physically demanding. Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where most treks take place, the trekking here is known to be more rugged and challenging due to the dense rainforest and steeper, often muddy, trails.


Trip Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival Entebbe Airport – Cassia Lodge

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our guide who will then take you to Cassia Lodge for an overnight and dinner. Meal plan Dinner.

Day 2 Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge

Our guide/driver picks you at 7:00 am from your Hotel or place of residence in Kampala. Drive to Mbarara (283km from Kampala) via Masaka. Make a first stop over at Equator crossing for snacks and photography. Proceed with a visit to Igongo Cultural village this is more rewarding and amazing as you visit the Ankole museum. Lunch break is made at Agip Motel Mbarara. After lunch, drive to Bwindi. This is the lushest highland rain forest on earth, filled with primates and exotic birds, valleys, hilltops and papyrus swamps. Dinner and overnight stay at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge. Meal Plan: (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Day 3 Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge

Begin the day with breakfast ready for trekking, which begins at 8:00 am with a briefing from the UWA staff. Ensure to carry along with you rain jacket, drinking water, snacks, jungle boots etc The guides will lead you inside the jungle to see the shy Primates for a group you have been booked for. Do not forget to take your lunch boxes and all the necessary gear to track the rare Mountain Gorilla, perhaps one of the most exciting wildlife experiences on earth. The tracking may take between 2 and 6 hours but it’s well worth the effort. The afternoon is spent on a village walk. The Buhoma Village Walk gives you a great opportunity to see how the people urrounding Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It also is a great way to support the local community in a direct way. The Walk begins with your guide at Buhoma Community Rest Camp and is most informative, rewarding to the average visitor. It will amaze you how resourceful the local people are as you see and learn their ways. Dinner and overnight stay at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge. Meal Plan: (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Day 4 Rwanda Parc Volcano - Le bamboo Gorilla Lodge

After breakfast, drive to Rwanda as you enjoy the rolling hills for which Rwanda is well known to Ruhengere via Musanze. Thereafter drive by the lakes (Ruhondo and Mutera) arriving at parc Volcanoes in the afternoon. The evening is spent on sightseeing and relaxing around the hotel. Meals and overnight at Le bamboo Gorilla Lodge. Meal Plan: (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Day 5 Gorilla Trekking Parc Volcanoes - Le bamboo Gorilla Lodge

After breakfast, you will depart for the headquarters of the Park where your driver-guide will accomplish the necessary formalities for you. You will meet your ranger guide(s) for a briefing about the greatest animal experience ever! Overnight and dinner at Le bamboo Gorilla Lodge. Meal Plan: (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Day 6 Parc Volcanoes and Departure

Track the golden monkeys thereafter return to Kigali, you will have your Kigali city trip including the Genocide Memorial centre at Gisozi. Transfer to the Airport for your departure. Meal Plan: (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner). End of service.

January

The herds are moving into the southern plains of the Serengeti, around Ndutu, Kusini, and Naabi. The short grasses here are rich in nutrients, preparing the females for calving.

February

This is the peak calving month. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born, often within a few weeks of each other. This spectacle attracts a high concentration of predators, making it an excellent time for predator-prey sightings.

March

The calves are a few weeks old and growing quickly. The herds begin to spread out as they continue to graze on the southern plains, preparing for the long journey north.

April

The long rains begin, prompting the herds to start their movement northwest. They form long columns as they begin their trek through the central Serengeti.

May

The migration gathers momentum, with vast columns of wildebeest stretching for miles. The herds congregate in the Western Corridor, and the mating season, or "the rut," begins.

June

The dry season starts, and the wildebeest face their first major challenge: the Grumeti River. Thousands of animals must cross this crocodile-infested river, creating dramatic and intense encounters.

July

The herds continue their journey north, with many arriving in the northern Serengeti. The Grumeti River crossings are in full swing, and some of the first herds may begin to cross the even more treacherous Mara River.

August

This is one of the best months to witness the famous Mara River crossings. The herds are spread out across the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, making multiple crossings back and forth over the river in search of greener pastures.

September

The river crossings continue, though the intensity may decrease. Large numbers of wildebeest are now grazing in the fertile plains of the Maasai Mara in Kenya.

October

As the dry season approaches its climax, the wildebeest start to slowly move back into the Serengeti from the Maasai Mara, heading east and south.

November

The short rains begin, signaling the herds to make a decisive move south towards the replenished plains of the eastern Serengeti. They make their way through the Lobo and Loliondo areas.

December

The wildebeest arrive back on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. They are widely dispersed, feeding on the fresh grass and getting ready for the next calving season.
