You'll witness this natural spectacle from a 4x4 Land Cruiser along the river, facing Nile crocodile challenges. Predators migrate north during this period. Combine this with iconic destinations like Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park for an enjoyable safari and spot both Migration and Big Five animals. It starts and ends in Zanzibar.


Trip Itinerary

Day 1 Zanzibar fly to Northern Serengeti National Park (Kogatende) - Baobab Serengeti Camp

After breakfast, you will be picked up and driven to Zanzibar Airport for a flight to Northern Serengeti. Upon arrival, you'll proceed with a game drive in the wilderness, tracking the Great Migration trails. Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park. A UNESCO World Heritage site and recently proclaimed the 7th Wonder of the World, Serengeti is famed for its annual migration where some six million hooves pound the open plains. Serengeti offers an exotic game-viewing experience in the whole of Africa, giving you an up-close look at the animals you've only seen in National Geographic: great herds of buffaloes, smaller groups of elephants and giraffes, and thousands of elands, topis, kongonis, impalas, and Grant’s gazelles. Day 2 Northern Serengeti National Park (Mara River Focus on Migration) - Baobab Serengeti Camp

After breakfast at the camp, you'll depart with your picnic lunch for a game drive to view the great migration. Serengeti National Park Resident wildlife numbers are exceptionally high in the Wagakuria area, with a pride of lions up to 30 strong. From August to October, the area turns into a wildlife paradise. The key feature is the Mara River, and it is not uncommon to see the herds cross the Mara River north on one day and then back south a few days later. Please note that finding an actual crossing is difficult and is sometimes a matter of luck. Overnight at Baobab Serengeti Camp. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 3 Central Serengeti National Park Game Drive (Big Five Animals) - Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge

After breakfast at the camp, you'll drive to Central Serengeti for a full-day game drive, still observing the Big Five Africa. Late afternoon, you'll return to the lodge for your dinner and overnight stay. The park is renowned for its healthy population of resident wildlife, especially the Big Five. It's known for the five most prized trophies: Lion—the Serengeti is believed to have the largest population of lions in Africa, with over 3,000 in this ecosystem. African Leopard—these elusive predators are commonly spotted in the Seronera region, with a population of around 1,000 African elephants. Overnight at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge. Day 4 Ngorongoro Crater - Escarpment Luxury Lodge

You'll depart after breakfast at the camp for Ngorongoro Conservation Area, embarking on a full-day crater tour game drive with a picnic lunch. In the evening, you'll drive to the lodge close to Lake Manyara National Park for dinner and an overnight stay. The highlight of Ngorongoro is its deep, volcanic crater, the world's largest unflooded and unbroken caldera. Approximately 20 kilometers across, 600 meters deep, and covering 300 square kilometers, the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking natural wonder. We will explore Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner, known for its abundance of flamingos, hippos, and other water birds. Overnight at Escarpment Luxury Lodge. Day 5 Lake Manyara National Park then Fly Back to Zanzibar

After breakfast, you'll drive to Lake Manyara National Park for a game drive. In the afternoon, you'll return to Arusha Airstrip for your flight back to Zanzibar. Lake Manyara National Park offers a splendid introduction to Tanzania's birdlife, with over 400 species recorded. Even a first-time visitor might expect to see around 100 species in a day. Beyond the floodplain, a slender belt of acacia woodland is the preferred habitat for Manyara's famed tree-climbing lions and impressive tusked elephants. Meal Plan: Breakfast.

January

The herds are moving into the southern plains of the Serengeti, around Ndutu, Kusini, and Naabi. The short grasses here are rich in nutrients, preparing the females for calving.

February

This is the peak calving month. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born, often within a few weeks of each other. This spectacle attracts a high concentration of predators, making it an excellent time for predator-prey sightings.

March

The calves are a few weeks old and growing quickly. The herds begin to spread out as they continue to graze on the southern plains, preparing for the long journey north.

April

The long rains begin, prompting the herds to start their movement northwest. They form long columns as they begin their trek through the central Serengeti.

May

The migration gathers momentum, with vast columns of wildebeest stretching for miles. The herds congregate in the Western Corridor, and the mating season, or "the rut," begins.

June

The dry season starts, and the wildebeest face their first major challenge: the Grumeti River. Thousands of animals must cross this crocodile-infested river, creating dramatic and intense encounters.

July

The herds continue their journey north, with many arriving in the northern Serengeti. The Grumeti River crossings are in full swing, and some of the first herds may begin to cross the even more treacherous Mara River.

August

This is one of the best months to witness the famous Mara River crossings. The herds are spread out across the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, making multiple crossings back and forth over the river in search of greener pastures.

September

The river crossings continue, though the intensity may decrease. Large numbers of wildebeest are now grazing in the fertile plains of the Maasai Mara in Kenya.

October

As the dry season approaches its climax, the wildebeest start to slowly move back into the Serengeti from the Maasai Mara, heading east and south.

November

The short rains begin, signaling the herds to make a decisive move south towards the replenished plains of the eastern Serengeti. They make their way through the Lobo and Loliondo areas.

December

The wildebeest arrive back on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. They are widely dispersed, feeding on the fresh grass and getting ready for the next calving season.
